Pressure sensor mat is invented in this system to produce pressure maps for different human activities. By analyzing the pressure map, one may know the incident happens on the mat. The developed system includes motion and fall detections that are important to issue immediate call for medical caregivers and consequently reducing the mortality rate. Once the fall is detected, an alert message will be sent in the form of SMS and email. The fall detection algorithm consists of 2 phases: shape detection and database matching. The designed system is a non-invasive device essential for detection of fall and monitoring, which gives an accuracy of 80% in detecting a fall event for phase 1 detection and 90% in detecting a fall event for phase 2 detection. This system can be used as a monitoring system for nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, and houses (with elders living alone). Once fall is detected, the system will alert their nurses or family members instantly, and consequently reducing the mortality rate.
