One of the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) objectives is to increase driver safety by exchanging information between vehicles. Vehicles can communicate via in-vehicle devices that continuously share safety, mobility, and environmental information using wireless communication technologies. This information enables a vehicle to be connected to other vehicles or infrastructures. These connected vehicles can alert drivers to potential hazards, take over vehicle operations when needed or even manage networks of autonomous vehicles in the near future. Hence, the project aims to tackle the non-line of sight (NLoS) issue by enabling communication between vehicles. The prototype is developed based on the NLoS collision avoidance scenario. HC-12 transceiver modules, ultrasonic sensors, and Arduino Uno that acts as receiver and transmitter when vehicle communication is established is integrated to activate LEDs and Buzzer at a certain distance. To simulate a road driving experience, remote control cars were mounted with the components and collision avoidance scenarios were set up by assuming the vehicles are travelling on a one-way road. Different speed and distance between three remote control cars were experimented. A safe distance threshold is defined to avoid collisions. Possible collisions between vehicles will trigger the LEDs and buzzers to warn the drivers. Information like vehicle distance and speed can be transmitted and received by both approaching and host vehicle via Vehicle-to-vehicle communication. This innovation enables a vehicle node to warn its driver to brake in a situation where another V2V-equipped vehicle node decelerates quickly. This could undoubtedly streamline the operation of vehicles node to avoid road accidents in the roadway. Besides, the developed prototype utilizes low power and non-restricted frequency for exchanging information between vehicle nodes. This creates a seamless travelling experience for the drivers because drivers will be aware when other vehicles suddenly slow down or stop, or approaching faster and closer to their vehicle which may require their fast reaction to avoid accidents even though the vehicles are not within their line of sight. Results indicate that it is significant to introduce safety elements to drivers as well as passengers through the implementation of vehicle to vehicle communication slater vehicle to everything (V2X) technology. The significance of this innovation is to provide a platform of connectivity for vehicles. Vehicle communication is an emerging technology under development by automotive giants such as Tesla and several start-ups. It promises to make human driving safer and make it possible to connect vehicles and infrastructure through wireless networks. Furthermore, once fully deployed, this connectivity could reduce accidents caused by human error by up to 70% and substantially impact traffic jams.
