MySedia: A Mobile App For Disaster Awareness And Preparedness In Malaysia Based On Frugal Innovation

    Inventor

Despite past experiences and strong disaster management mechanisms, life and property losses are still unavoidable. In the last two decades (1998-2018), 51 disaster events reported causing 281 death, 3 million people’s life affected and RM8 billion in dames due to disasters in Malaysia (as reported by UNESCAP - the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific). The implementation of mobile systems (driven by frugal innovation) can reduce the impact and ramifications of disasters, particularly if a technology solution can assist Malaysian in preparing for disasters. Frugal innovation-based solution for the Malaysian community to enhance disaster preparedness in Malaysia does not exist. MySedia (Malaysia System for Emergency/Disaster Information and Awareness) is a mobile app that serves as a one-stop knowledge platform linking citizens with disaster preparedness essential functions, ultimately improving disaster resiliency. MySedia was designed based on frugal innovation concept which emphasizes 'doing more with less' resources and low cost, and adding value to social and the economy. MySedia aims to reflect ‘Malaysia Sedia’ for any natural disaster/emergency situation and serve the needs of every Malaysian who has a deep concern on issues pertaining to disasters. It is a platform for knowledge, and fun learning, and contributes to the overall well-being of Malaysians. Highlights of Features: 1. MySEDIA serves as one-stop mobile solution for citizen disaster preparedness 2. Prompt disaster alerts to be prepared 3. Disaster Profile - featuring details of common disasters in Malaysia, its preparedness methods, and related supports. For example, information related to floods such as the time for the water to rise, whether water will rise or not, whether should citizens evacuate or stay, floodwiki for complete information, are some of the features designed in the flood disaster profiles. 4. Are you Ready? - featuring ways to get ready, including preparation of Red Bag, an idea mooted by MKN for each household to prepare a red bag to be carried during evacuation 5. Climate Change - featuring relevant knowledge to elevate climate-related awareness and contribute to the greater goal of SDG. This includes global warming information, my role in climate change, facts and figures, videos and games. 6. Disasters Game - a fun feature provided by UNDRR (UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction). This is a free game available to learn how to be safe, and how to prevent, and at the same time gives a fun element in learning with scores for each game level. The games are available for floods, tsunami, and earthquake. This is suitable for children and adults. 6. Important Links are included for citizens who wish to explore more with agencies involved in disasters or portals on disasters such as Mercy Malaysia, InfoBanjir, MyMetData, Smart, Nadma, ReliefWeb, and Seadpri. 7. Social Media linkages are included for latest postings on disasters - Facebook, Youtube, Instagram and Twitter Beneficiaries of MySEDIA This apps is dedicated to all Malaysians. It is a platform for knowledge, community notification, learning point, and readiness. Citizens of Malaysia will be aware of disasters in Malaysia and learn to be prepared. For this reason, this apps included components for awareness, knowledge, and communication. Apps of this nature does not exist in Malaysia. At this point, we have infobanjir which provides information about flood only. Scholars in emergency management highlights that any system that is not used during normal condition (not a disaster condition), will not be used during emergency condition such as disaster. As such, MySEDIA is meant to be used for daily use to know climate, flood news, landslide occurences, play disaster games, know what to have in a red bag, etc. that will ensure Malaysians know and ready for any disasters. MySEDIA to be part of Malaysians' essential life apps is key for disaster resiliency. Benefits Humanities - Timely and effective humanitarian actions to prevent and alleviate human suffering Environment - Scale up in climate change activities with greater awareness Economy - Frugal, Save cost, business continuity, reduce economical impact Uniqueness of MySEDIA MySedia acts as One Stop Center for Citizens Easy for Citizen to receive disaster alerts Includes all disasters in Malaysia Fun learning of disaster readiness using Game method Suitable for all ages of citizens Multi-lingual SDG Goals Goal 3 - Good Health And Well-Being. MySEDIA strengthens the critical capacity of Malaysians for early warning, risk reduction and well being. MySEDIA play an auxiliary role for national and global disaster resiliency Goal 11 - Sustainable Cities and Communities. MySEDIA will support mitigation and adaptation to climate change, resilience to disasters, and develop and implement, in line with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, holistic disaster risk management at all levels. Goal 13 - Climate Action. MySEDIA will strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards and natural disasters in all countries.
